I am occasionally asked “I floss and brush my teeth every day, why do I need to get them professionally cleaned?” I usually pause and respond with an analogy. I tell them “you can vacuum your carpet every day, but your carpet will look better and last longer if you have it periodically professionally cleaned” And so it goes with dentistry. Plaque (soft bacteria) and tartar or calculus (hard bacteria) can develop over time in some difficult to reach areas. They, in turn, trigger gum disease which is an infection that starts in the gums and spreads to the bone holding in the teeth. This can lead to eventual tooth mobility and tooth loss. In these difficult economic times we live in, a cleaning and check –up is quite a bargain. Besides healthier gums and a brighter and healthier smile, you are also checked thoroughly for decay and even oral cancer. All of these disease processes are easier, quicker and less costly when detected early. So you can save teeth and money!
So if it’s been a while, now is a good time to call us at 904-384-4391 and set up your next dental cleaning!

Dental x-rays do expose patients to some radiation, but the diagnostic value is of much greater benefit. Problems that are discovered early not only save money, but often can save a tooth!

Reduced exposure through technocological improvements have made this even safer.. Recently the new digital x-rays are lowering radiation by 50-80 %. On an average it would take 950 individual dental x-rays to equal the amount of radiation the average citizen picks up just from naturally occurring background sources each year!

Even though digital x-rays produce a low level of radiation precautions should still be taken by the dentist. These include using a lead apron shield to protect the body and only taking x-rays that are necessary.

I am often asked… When is it OK to start whitening teeth for teens? Of course, everyone loves a whiter smile and we can help get good results with teens. The key is sensitivity control. Long term damage is not the issue. The sensitivity is reversible over time, but avoiding it or certainly minimizing it is the trick.

What we do in our office is start gently and gradually increase the concentration of the bleaching gel until we determine just where the comfort level is.

The first step may be to try Crest Whitening Strips. Sometimes this works. If this was not satisfactory, we would next make custom trays to be used with a mild 10% whitening gel for an hour or two. Depending on the comfort level, the gel concentration and frequency strategy would then be developed to assure a bright smile pain-free!

“You guys are crazy!” “What are you thinking?” are just some of the comments we were getting as we told our patients that we (the Dr Rittenberg office team-all 8 of us) were packing up and going to freezing Chicago in late February for the 145th annual Midwinter Dental Convention. Besides some wonderful teambuilding ,a little fun,( and even a liitle snow), the weekend was filled with a wide variety of courses in which we all participated. Dr. Rittenberg took courses in TMJ ( study of the joints that open and close the jaw), bonding ( cosmetic improvements), and early oral cancer detection. The assistants and hygienist also took courses that allowed them to learn more and perform better at their professions. We all also had some time to roam the massive exhibit hall and see and try the latest innovations in dentistry. We truly are committed to giving you the best in personal dental care!

I am excited about the result we have been getting helping patients that have loose dentures. We have been placing mini implants under dentures that help hold the dentures in place. This has basically eliminated using dental adhesives and many patients have been able to get rid of the acrylic that is on the roof of the mouth part of the denture so that they can taste things better. It is a simple procedure and the cost is 1/2 to 1/3 less than traditional dental implants and the benefit is immediate.
